What is Vaastu?
Vaastu is derived from the Sanskrit word “vāstu” which means a dwelling or house with a corresponding plot of land. Vaastu Shastra is a science as well as an art, it is a traditional system of architecture. The designs prepared as per Vaastu Shastra use geometric patterns (yantra), symmetry, and directional alignments and are intended to integrate architecture with nature, and ancient beliefs. Simply put, vaastu is creation of forms that are in harmony with laws of the cosmos. Vaastu lays down certain values that orient and plan each element of a building.
Why should you incorporate Vaastu in your structures?
Often in the modern world, we focus on the looks of a house but we forget to align it with the laws of nature, this is where Vaastu aids us. It is a collection of principles that help create not only sound and reliable structures but also help bring about positivity, good vibes and good fortune. Like all the other traditional sciences, it is based on creating a balance and harmony between the five elements of nature which bring about prosperity. It also takes into account magnetic fields, the gravitational field and position of earth, all of which are important to regulate good health.

Certain basic principles of Vaastu Shastra
- Southeast is a very beneficial direction and is supposed to have a kitchen. When construction takes place, this is the direction where the first pillar should be erected.
East is the direction, where the sun rises and gives a new beginning. The direction is supposed to be beneficial for everyone in the house. The direction suggests prosperity. The entrance of the house should be facing this direction. However, no kitchen or toilet should be built in this direction.
West, on the other hand, is the direction where the sun sets and this means that there may be negative energies which is why the entrance to the west is not advisable. However, this direction may be great a staircase.
The south portion of the house should be such that it should be elevated than the other portion of the house. A tank can be situated in this direction. One can also build a staircase here.
North direction is beneficial for those who have offices here. It is the direction of the business people. North side should be kept open and have minimum construction so that it brings peace and comfort as well.
North-East is an auspicious direction, it is considered to be holy and promotes positive vibes among people living in the house. If the direction is used properly, it provides wealth, health, reputation to the members of the house.
North-West direction is in-between the north and the west and thus is among the desired direction for interpersonal relationships. If utilized properly, the direction will promote and foster healthy relationships with friends and family members.
Southwest is known to be a direction of the demons. It has a hold on the decisions you make regarding business. If the entrance is facing southwest, then there will bad events. This portion of the house should not be left open.
